A bird in my hands

Hewing bird shapes with my axe is satisfying fun. Working and exploring these simple forms is an ongoing study, evolving with each bird that takes shape in my making hands. One chip at a time. Axercise.

It started out as innocent as trying to use a chunk of waste wood from some green wood spoon stock. When prepping billets and blanks I toss these bits into a box to dry before burning them.

Just off the axe

I took a small piece and after a few axe cuts discovered that I had indeed shaped a bird. I had seen several rough hewn birds on Instagram, by talented makers whom I follow there. Before long I was shaping larger pieces, dryer pieces. It was a two fold discovery. I was using more of my waste wood and I was making something new, something that also generated the feeling of satisfaction.

Two sides, same bird

I am enjoying this part of making, exploring new shapes and directions all the while using the same tools that I use for spoon carving.

Refining these shapes with knives and gouges. Adding that little something extra with paint.
