Chunky Scoop Shapes

This morning I just had to pop open one of the recently foraged beech lengths.

The spalting in the cut ends looked pretty and my curiosity at its highest level, so …

spalting … mmmmmm

I cut 19cm lengths, split it with my froe, cleaned out the pith section and drew outlines for a couple of scoopy spoons. A bit of chop chop later et voila! …

Two promising blanks ready for the straight and hook knives

The wood is at perfect moisture content for relatively easy carving. This is how I like my beech wood. I also like how hard it dries. What I do not enjoy is carving dry beech blanks, nope. I do not like that.

Now on to cleaning up my design by paring to the lines. Then I hollow the bowl. I use my large hooks for that.

Hallowed hollowing hooks
Hollowed the bowl to desired depth and continued on shaping from the outside.
Scoop form shaped and hollowed out. Thinned the handle and defined its curve. Now off to dry a bit more before further refinement and finishing cuts
General direction indicated by rough shaping. More refinement to come.

Happy carving. Wood feels good.
